The "Citizens Fire Academy" has been Postponed


Our Munson Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy that was scheduled to begin in late April, has been postponed due to State, Federal and Local cancelation of events. We will be rescheduling at a later date and will keep you informed on our Facebook page as well.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

When will the academy be rescheduled?
We are hoping we will be cleared to reschedule beginning in June or July. When we do, we will still plan to hold the classes on Thursdays for six consecutive weeks. Each class will run from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. This academy is held at the Munson Fire Station,12200 Auburn Rd., Chardon, OH 44024. The Phone number is: 440-286-6797. This academy is FREE to attend.

What is this academy?
This objective of our CITIZENS FIRE ACADEMY meets is to give participants insight into the different aspects of what this fire agency does. Participants will gain an increased awareness of the day to day operations and to the different types of fire apparatus that are used in the community. Your participation is encouraged and your questions are welcome.

What are some of the topics that will be discussed in this academy?
A sample of topics to be covered include fire suppression activities, EMS activities, CPR and Stop the Bleed class, Fire Prevention, a detailed overview of the fire apparatus that is used, as well as an overview of the fire administration of the department.


Who “teaches” this academy?
A sample of speakers include: Fire Chief Michael Vatty, guest speaker(s), and individual firefighters of the Munson Fire Department.

Do we get to ride in fire trucks and ambulances?
Yes. There will be opportunities to ride in fire apparatus however, it will only be in a training environment and will not be in an emergency situation. This is for the safety of our participants and the privacy of our patients.

Can anyone attend this academy?
The participants are restricted to Munson Township residents and/or Munson Township business owners. The minimum age requirement is 16 and those between 16-18 years of age must have parental consent.

How do I enroll in this academy?
ALL participants must complete an application, which could include a criminal background check. Munson Fire
Department reserves the right to deny enrollment to any participants, which would include those that have a felony and/or more severe misdemeanor convictions. Applications are available at the fire station, at www.munsonfire.org

Does being enrolled in this academy afford the participants any special privileges?
NO. This academy does NOT turn participants into fire or EMS personnel. The purpose of this citizen fire academy is to give participants an overview of the operations and equipment that the fire department utilizes. This does not give special privileges to respond to emergency incidents.
